In desktop mode, you can use Steam. Deck to run other programs and launchers, like and the Origin client. Other than playing games, Steam Deck’s Desktop mode allows you to do a lot of other things.

As previously stated, you can install software, surf the internet using a web browser, test some emulation, and much more. Furthermore, you can use an HDMI cable to connect your Steam Deck to your computer monitor, allowing you to view your Steam Deck screen on a larger screen. This means you can use it in the same way as a mini PC if you want to.

To use Steam Deck’s Desktop Mode, just follow the simple steps outlined below:

  • First, turn on your Steam Deck and press the Steam button.
  • After that, press the Power button at the bottom of the screen.
  • On the next screen, go to the bottom of the screen and click “Switch to Desktop.”
  • Finally, Steam Deck will switch to Desktop Mode after a few seconds.

Steam Deck uses the KDE Plasma desktop mode, which resembles Windows 10 but is actually a full Linux desktop that can be used to replace a PC. Although it is fairly limited out of the box, with very little extra installed in the desktop mode, it can be extended if desired.
