How to fix “failed to initialize STEAM” error on PUBG

If you want to play any Steam game, you’ll need Steam. You won’t be able to play PUBG if you get the failed to initialize STEAM error every time you launch it. You’re unlikely to be able to even enter the lobby, let alone join a game or claim one of your daily rewards. Here’s how to fix the problem.

Restart Steam

Steam is usually set to start up automatically, so it’s always running in the background. This shouldn’t be a problem in most cases, but if you see the failed to initialize STEAM message, it’s time to restart the client.

  • Right-click Steam, in the system tray.
  • From the context menu, choose Exit.
  • Activate & open Steam once more.
  • Start PUBG.

Run PUBG with Admin rights

Although most games do not require admin rights to run, the “failed to initialize STEAM” error could indicate a permissions issue. If you’ve recently updated PUBG, you may need to run the game with administrator privileges to fix the problem.

  • Open the File Explorer program.
  • Go to C:Program & C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\TslGame\Binaries\Win64.
  • Select Run as administrator from the context menu when you right-click the game’s EXE file.

Note: If you installed PUBG on a drive other than the C drive, you’ll need to change the path above to reflect the drive where you installed the game.

Verify file integrity

The error “Failed to initialize STEAM” could indicate a problem with the game’s files (PUBG). Steam can diagnose the problem, download new files, and perform an in-place fix.

  • Start Steam.
  • Visit the library.
  • Select Properties from the context menu by right-clicking PUBG in the left column.
  • Select the Local Files option from the drop-down menu.
  • To check the integrity of the game files, click the Verify Integrity of Game Files button.
  • Allow Steam to repair the files before starting the game.

Open in Windowed mode

Set PUBG’s launch options to Windowed mode.

  • Start Steam.
  • Visit the library.
  • Right-click PUBG in the left column and choose Properties.
  • Select the General option from the drop-down menu.
  • Enter -windowed in the Launch options field.
  • Restart the game if necessary.

Reinstall Steam and PUBG

You can reinstall both Steam and PUBG if everything else fails. This will resolve issues with both.

  • Open the Control Panel.
  • Uninstall a program by going to Programs>Uninstall a program.
  • Uninstall PUBG by selecting it and clicking the Uninstall button.
  • Uninstall Steam by selecting it and clicking the Uninstall button.
  • After both items have been uninstalled, download and install Steam.
  • Download PUBG after Steam has been installed.
