When it comes to Xbox and PlayStation controllers, almost everyone has a preference. Some people prefer the smaller PS controller because it makes using the Claw grip easier, while others prefer the Xbox controller’s diagonal stick placement.
These settings will work with either of the controllers you use to play Fortnite. Go to the Game tab in your Fortnite settings menu to change these settings.

Fortnite Controller Deadzone settings
Deadzone is entirely reliant on the controller you use. You want it to be as low as possible without getting stick-drift for maximum accuracy and reaction time.
- Left Stick Deadzone: 0% (then increase as required)
- Right Stick Deadzone: 0% (then increase as required)
Start a game of Creative, set your Deadzone to 0, then gradually increase it until your sticks no longer drift by themselves. Although your controller may require a different setting, we use 6% for the left and 5% for the right.

Builder Pro is your best friend when it comes to controllers. The default controller options in Fortnite were clumsy and awkward when it first came out. Since then, Epic Games has added a slew of controller accessibility features, with Builder Pro being by far the most intuitive and user-friendly.
Begin with Builder Pro and figure out which binds will work best for you.
Edit should be bound to L3/Left Stick to make editing faster and easier. This allows you to make quick edits on the fly without accidentally editing while building. You won’t have to worry about unbinding Sprint to do this if you enable Sprint by Default.
If you’re using a PC controller, make sure to select Generic controller. When compared to Xbox or PlayStation controllers, this option reduces button latency for some reason.
Best Fortnite preferred item slots

This is largely a matter of personal preference, but we do have some recommendations for how you should organize your inventory:
- Slot 1: Shotgun
- Slot 2: Assault Rifle
- Slot 3: Sniper Rifle / SMG
- Slot 4: Explosives / Deployable Items
- Slot 5: Consumables
If you pay attention to professional Fortnite controller players, you’ll notice that their shotgun is always in the first slot. This is because, no matter which weapon you were holding when you started the sequence when you press Pickaxe > Build > Switch Weapon, it always defaults to your 1 slot.
This may show to be a complicated sequence, but it’s a very common one in Fortnite. We just went over the process of removing someone’s wall. If you keep your AR in the first slot, as many players do, you’ll have to switch weapons twice to get to your shotgun, which will take time away from you.
It will take some getting used to the new setup, but it’s as easy as moving all of your inventory to the right once. If you have Auto-Sort Consumables to the Left enabled, you’ll need to disable it.
Try these Fortnite controller settings, and you’ll be building and shooting like a pro in no time.
